A wizard costume is mostly one piece: a long, hooded robe. Get that right and everything else is a finishing touch. Here's how to choose the robe, which accessories make it believable, and four kinds of wizard to play.
In short
- The robe does 80% of the work. Choose length and colour carefully.
- A belt with pouches and potions tells everyone what you do.
- A staff or walking stick completes the outline.
- Velvet robes are warm: perfect for autumn, heavy in summer.
Choose the robe
The Velvet Hooded Robe with Printed Trim is a long, sleeved robe with a deep hood and a printed border. It comes in black, blue and wine red, in sizes S to XXXL (chest 116 to 136 cm). Black comes in S, L, XL and XXL only, so check the size you need.
Prefer something lighter? A hooded cloak over a long tunic gives a similar outline. The Velvet Hooded Cloak comes in five colours and stops at 100 cm from the shoulder.
Four kinds of wizard
- The classic wizard: a blue robe, a long staff, a pouch of “runes” at the belt.
- The dark sorcerer: black or wine red, hood up, a Twin Dragon Bracer on one wrist.
- The druid: a green hooded cloak over a tunic, the Tree of Life Bracer and a wooden staff.
- The alchemist: a robe or long coat with a Round Potion Bottle with Belt Holder or the Embossed Waist Bag Belt with Potion Holder, with its waist bag and vials.

Accessories that sell it
- A belt over the robe gives the outline a waist and holds your pouches.
- A small pouch such as the Leather Drawstring Jewellery Pouch, for “rune stones” or real keys.
- A staff: a long walking stick or a straight branch. Check your faire's rules on props.
- A book with a plain cover, tied to your belt with a cord.

Wearing a robe all day
- Lift the front hem a little on stairs and steep paths.
- Velvet is warm. On a hot day, wear only a light layer underneath.
- Hang the robe up after wearing so the velvet pile stays smooth.
- Polyester velvet can be spot-cleaned; see our care guide.
Questions people ask
What does a wizard wear?
A long hooded robe or cloak, a belt with pouches or potions, and a staff. Everything else is optional.
Do I need a pointed hat?
No. A deep hood looks more medieval and stays on in the wind.
Is a wizard robe good for Halloween?
Yes, and it doubles as a Grim Reaper or cultist costume in black. See more Halloween ideas.
