Elf Costume Guide: Elven Outfits for Faires, LARP and Halloween

Elves are one of the most-loved fantasy characters at faires, LARP events and Halloween parties. The look is easy to recognise: flowing layers, woodland colours, a hood or a circlet, and something leaf-shaped. Here's how to build it, from a complete set to a simple version from a few pieces.

In short

  • Choose your elf: wood elf, high elf or dark elf. The colours follow from that.
  • Flowing shapes and long sleeves say “elf” more than any single prop.
  • A circlet or headband across the brow is the classic finishing touch.
  • The quickest route is a complete set; the cheapest is a cloak over what you own.

Pick your kind of elf

  • Wood elf: forest greens and browns, a hood, leather bracers, practical boots. Close to a ranger.
  • High elf: lighter colours, long sleeves, a circlet with a medallion, very little leather.
  • Dark elf: black or wine red, silver details, a deep hood.

The complete set

The Hooded Elf Dress Costume Set is built around a long-sleeved hooded dress with a high-low hem. It also includes a lace-up corset belt, a ring belt with a pouch, a pair of laced bracers, over-knee socks, a head chain, elf ears and drop earrings. It comes in black, green or wine red, in sizes S to XXL, so it works for a wood elf, a dark elf or a festive red elf.

Build your own elf

  1. Base: a blouse with full sleeves, such as the Flared-Sleeve Renaissance Blouse, or a long tunic.
  2. Shape: a corset belt or the Multi-Cord Ring Belt with its tasselled ends.
  3. Hood: the Hooded Cloak with Leaf Brooch, fastened at the throat with a green leaf.
  4. Brow: the Knotwork Circlet with Medallion or the Thin Celtic Knotwork Headband.
  5. Arm: the short Tree of Life Bracer, a natural fit for wood elves and druids.

Elf looks for men

Start with a long tunic and slim trousers tucked into boots. Add the leaf-brooch cloak, a tree of life bracer and a circlet. Keep it light and clean: elves don't do heavy armour.

Ears, hair and small touches

  • Ears: blend the edge of costume ears into your skin with a little foundation, and let some hair fall over them.
  • Hair: loose waves or simple braids look right. Keep the circlet just above the eyebrows.
  • Hem: a high-low hem is easier on grass and woodland paths than a floor-length one.

Questions people ask

What colours do elves wear?

Wood elves wear greens and browns, high elves wear lighter colours, and dark elves wear black, deep red and silver.

Is an elf costume good for LARP?

Yes. Choose a hem you can walk through woods in, add sturdy boots, and keep your gear in a belt pouch.

Can I wear it to a Renaissance faire?

Yes. Elves are a familiar sight at faires, especially on fantasy weekends.
