The ranger is the most practical character in fantasy: a traveller of forests and borderlands, dressed for weather and long walks. That makes it one of the most comfortable outfits to wear all day at a faire or LARP event. Here's how to build one, piece by piece.
In short
- The key piece is a hooded cloak or a long hooded overcoat.
- Under it: a long-sleeved shirt and a vest or sleeveless tunic.
- Laced bracers, a belt with pouches and lace-up boots finish the look.
- Stick to forest colours: green, moss, brown and grey.
The ranger outfit, layer by layer
- Shirt. A long-sleeved shirt in cream or white, such as the Renaissance Shirt with Laced Sleeves.
- Over-layer. The Lace-Up Hunter Vest or the Sleeveless Cotton Tunic.
- Trousers. Loose trousers tucked into boots. The Laced Trousers with Ankle Ties come in army green, black, brown and off-white.
- Hood. The Hooded Ranger Cloak is a cotton-linen blend, 140 cm long, in army green, black, coffee, green and grey. Prefer your arms free? The Sleeveless Hooded Overcoat falls below the knee.
- Arms. A Laced Wrist Guard, a Tapered Laced Bracer or the short Centre-Laced Wrist Cuff.
- Belt and gear. The Embossed Waist Bag Belt with Potion Holder, or the Faux Leather Harness with Underarm Pouches for a scout's look.
- Boots. Mid-Calf Lace-Up Boots, or Lace-Up Studded Gaiters over your own boots.

Three kinds of ranger
- Woodland ranger: greens and browns, a leaf brooch at the throat, a tree of life bracer. Try the Hooded Cloak with Leaf Brooch.
- Northern ranger: greys and black, a fur-look cape over the cloak, heavier boots. Add the Viking Faux Fur Shoulder Cape.
- Scout or city ranger: dark colours, a harness with pouches, short wrist cuffs, hood up.
Want it in one order?
The Hooded Cloak with Belt and Pouch brings four pieces together: a hooded cloak, an adjustable belt, a drawstring coin pouch and a headband. Wear it over your own plain tunic and trousers.

A note for archers
Shooting a real bow? Wear a proper archery arm guard on the inside of your bow arm, keep the bracers for the look, and follow your faire's or LARP group's rules on bows and arrows.
Questions people ask
What does a ranger wear?
A hooded cloak or overcoat, a shirt with a vest or tunic, trousers, laced bracers, a belt with pouches and sturdy boots, all in forest colours.
Is a ranger outfit good for a hot day?
Yes, if you skip the cloak at midday. A sleeveless tunic over a light shirt stays cool and still looks the part.
Can women wear the ranger look?
Absolutely. Our women's outfit guide includes a ranger look built on the hooded overcoat and a corset belt.
